I also liked A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and also Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith. I am also a big fan of Adriana Trigiani who wrote Lucia Lucia, it's not so much a classic but a very good book. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is an excellent book.

Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
Actually almost any Steinbeck will do, esp. East of Eden or Grapes of Wrath.
Also have to highly recommend two Hemingway works, For Whom the Bell Tolls and Old Man and the Sea.

Without a doubt I would recommend Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, it's the most passionate book I have ever read. As you read it and drink in the atmosphere you can feel the lashing rain on your skin as you wander across the moors, you experience the deepest love imaginable, the joy and finally the intense grief.

Wuthering Heights. It's on the long side and has a slow start but once it gets going it's a really good story. If you're looking for something shorter try The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee; it's not that old but is ofttimes considered a classic. Anything by Jack London was also good, as I recall.

I haven't much been into the "old" classics, I tried to read Moby Dick once and fell asleep on every page, but I recently sucked up my aversion to the "classics", so to speak and read "David Copperfield" by Dickens. I actually couldn't put it down I loved it so much. Now I'm finally resolved to picking up "A Tale of Two Cities". I'm stoked now... :)

For adventure, but real life Kon Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl (spelling?)
For quiet reflection, but very compelling A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
