My wife refuses to buy a house if it doesn't have a separate laundry room upstairs...is this common? Is it that important to have a stupid separate laundry room upstairs?

I'm not too picky about what I want, but she's been very picky about it. I understand she is the one always at home, but we've been looking at houses for over a year now, and nothing seems to fit. We just had twins and need a bigger home. Is this laundry deal getting out of hand by now?

Um, yes. You try carrying loads of laundry up and down the stairs.

A happy wife is a happy home. Simple as that.

I have a friend who has her laundry room upstairs. I always think of the laundry downstairs (in the basement). It might not be important to you to have a separate laundry room upstairs, but it must be important to your wife. Isn't there some things about a house you want too? If you both are going to buy a house, you might as well buy what you want. If she doesn't find a house with an upstairs laundry room she might have to lower her standards. Ask her how long she will hold out for a house with a laundry room upstairs. Good Luck.

The new houses these days are being built with upstairs laundry rooms. It makes sense because that is where all the clothes come from and go back to.
It is horrible and dangerous to carry loads of laundry up and down stairs. Keep in mind that it has to be done at least twice a week. If you can make it easier on your wife it would be well worth it.
If you want a house without one then I suggest that you offer to do one load a week.
Please don't assume that what she wants is stupid.
Listen to her.
I'm glad that you asked us.

It would certainly be convenient. Perhaps you can find a house that has a space that can be converted into a laundry room. Personally, I have always perferred the laundry in the basement,\. I'm 70 yrs. old and still able to haul it up and down the stairs.

If "mama" ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. If you want to make the rest of your marriage to go smoothly, let her have her way with this episode. (She's probably the one that will spend the most time in it anyway!) Wishing you well!
