Shell shock is caused by excessive exposure to the stress of battle. Constant bombing, guns firing, death and destruction all around, constantly living with the risk of death from a multitude of causes, seeing friends wounded or killed in the blink of an eye, it all causes abnormally high levels of stress that the human mind is not prepared to deal with. At some point, people snap mentally. Shell shock is from the notion of bombshells exploding all around you for hours and you are powerless to stop them. Battle fatigue is another name for shell shock.

That's an old term for what is now called PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It has also been called Battle Fatigue and a a number of other things. It's the damage (often permanent) caused by the stress of having to be constantly alert in a life threatening situation. Symptoms include tremors, flashbacks, nightmares and general inability to function normally.

This expression came along during WWI. Soldiers in combat were exposed to cannon fire, explosions and trench warfare. Some troops were affected so much emotionally that the were treated for what we now call "Post Traumatic Disorder." Armed combat is always a terrible, fearful thing and many men do not stand up under the stress.

An irreversible shock to the system. I think. It was a term used in WW11, and I think it is now defined in a more clear term, and is diagnosed as PTSD. The memories of war. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Go to war, kill kill kill, watch your buddies be kill kill killed,
Come home, wash your car, love your wife and kids, and no more kill kill kill.
A nightmare you cannot awake from.
