Ford Pinto, Chevy Corvair of the Ralph Nader fame, and most recently Chevy pickups of the eighties, their fuel tanks are placed on the outside of the frame rails. Some blew up and the engineers back in the design stage memo'd that this was going to be a problem! They got the bean counters on the case and they estimated it would cost more to recall all the trucks for retrofit then to allow any possible pay-outs or settlements from any accidents! Go figure.

Most recent was the Ford (80's models) pickups in a side collision because of gas tank placement. The most popular case was brought up by Ralph Nader and the Chevrolet Corvair. That may be what you are looking for.

Chevrolet became the sacrificial lamb when their trucks with "saddle" tanks would blow up when the truck was hit on the side.
They were forced to give truck owners a voucher for a major discount on a NEW truck.

It didn't matter that Dodge, Ford, and International Harvester ALSO made trucks with saddle tanks that would blow up.

P.S.

Arnold, the Corvairs' problems were not explosive in nature. They had stability problems that caused loss of control.

The Pinto, otherwise know as the Ford FireBall tended to burst into flames when rear-ended.

The gas tank was poorly engineered and mis-located.

And the infamous case of a TV show (I think it was one of NBC's) getting sued by General Motors when they had tried to show how the trucks would blow up in a collision, but in reality had rigged model rocket engines to blow up the gas tanks for the TV footage.
