We just purchased this house... had a problem with cigarette smoke smell. We had several recommendations to repaint--I decided to start small with the whole repainting project thing by starting with the guest bathroom. It had some nasty looking border in it, so I used some hot steamy water to help remove the border. Only did a small section-- well the border came up... so has a lot of the paint. Now I have this large area where the paint is now gone, it peeled off in big sheets! I can see the drywall, and when I wipe my hand over this drywall, to me, it smells like smoke. I had planned on wiping down these painted walls with TSP substitute, priming with Oil Based Kilz odorless primer, and painting another latex paint. Now what do I do!? Have I screwed up the walls? Should I wipe down everything (including the visible drywall or whatever) with the TSP? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Clueless!! I want to do this right!!! Help!!!!

Any oil based primer/sealer should cover and seal the smell or stains. A couple of coats of latex paint should finish you up. Be sure to raise some windows or have good ventilation, oil based paint or primer release alot of fumes, therefore not a good idea to breath. Remember, you can apply oil based over water based (latex) but you can't paint latex over oil, it may peel off. Good luck

I would scrape all the paint off (be careful on drywall) then put a layer of primer (I think Kilz makes one that gets rid of odor) then re-paint the wall. If you have fairly deep holes in your drywall your going to have to fill them in with mud, smooth it out making sure the holes are filled, let it dry, then sandpaper them down even with the wall, then prime and paint. I would just go to the hardware store and ask the guy there about everything that you'll need.

you may might want to eliminate the latex paint first. that is going to proceed to peel in case you do not. as quickly because it is done, repaint the walls with a primer. The paint shop can help with that. Then paint the walls with a good high quality 'latex tooth' flat, semi gloss, or intense gloss, which ever you want. Flat will be dull and bland, semi gloss, will shave a really lite sheen, maximum painters favor this one, and maximum homeowners also. intense gloss, is commonly used on timber artwork round doors and residing house windows, and some cabinets. in spite of the undeniable fact that it particularly works properly on walls and ceilings and it shines reflecting the mild.

You're ok, but the wall won't be even. The way to solve that would be to put a thin layer of joint compound and feather out smoothen it. then prime paint with 2 coats of primer. I recommend laytex, oil base is EXTREMELY messy and hard ot get out of clothing and just about anything else it comes in contact with. Cleaning the brushes will be a nightmare also.

sounds like your doing the right stuff.now you know why a contractor has to bid the way they do.you will have to "skim" the areas with sheetrock mud and do a little sanding before you prime.you can buy an easy sand type .its cheap but dusty.a little trial and error and you'll be a pro.just make sure that you put it on thin and dont leave any ruff edges, you'll see them when you prime. try a couple of feet first so you can see what your doing.
