I remember this phrase being really popular (and annoying) when I was about 13. Prep or preppy just means you're classy and have a high class style. Most people think that preps are stuck up but even someone who dresses gothic can be stuck up. Next time your friends say something like that just say "Thanks!" because you're obviously classy!

Prep usually refers to a clothing style. Preppy clothing includes brightly colored polo shirts, short skirts, leggings, tightly fitted jean jackets and hoodies. Many preppy people shop at Holister, American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, as well as Lacoste and more high end stores. Generally it isn't a complement or an insult, unless someone says it to you in a negative way. The stereotypical prep is a dumb blonde, but not all people who dress preppy are idiots.

People shouldn't judge others but a "prep" is usually someone...
Who shops at Abercrombie, Hollister, American Eagle, Aeropostale and the like. One who cares about their appearence more than the average person and goes for classic, conservative styles.
You wouldn't find a prep guy with Green dyed hair and ripped jeans, you'd find a prep guy with a neat short haircut and jeans purchased from American Eagle.
This is the modern prep but the "real" preps are ones who shop at L.L. Bean, (Polo) Ralph Lauren, You know the like...

The technical definition is someone in America falling into a WASP (White/Wealthy, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant) ancestry. The majority of them reside in the North East and have come a much broader range of religion and background, but are USUALLY white. They shop at LL Bean, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, J. Crew and the like. Tennis, Crew, Golf, etc. are sport usually associated with them. This would most likely be a compliment to most people, for preps are considered 'the establishment', and part of the upper-middle class/bougeois part of social life. They control politics, thinking, culture, etc. They are not like yuppies at all, they believe in a conservative, traditional, and sophisticated way of life. *Usually going to Prep School and Ivy League Colleges as their form of education*****
However, your friends probably mean in the more modern sense of high school cliques and subcultures: a person who looks like they belong in PREP SCHOOL, and have a Collegiate/Ivy league essence about them. Lifestyle Brands like Hollister and Abercrombie are worn by them.

Superficially, it could be described as a fad; ask Kanye West fans, and you'd have an idea of what I am saying.
Of course, if we were honest, we'd have to admit not everybody likes the term, as it can be a euphemism for "dork" (then again, I have seen people where that title as a badge of honor).
Whatever. Ultimately, I think it is a mindset. It's only negative if you let it be. The world does not (indeed cannot afford to) revolve around sagged jeans and tennis dress-like t-shirts!!!

Does she mean "Preppy" or "Preppie" both terms referring to the upper middle class echelon, people(like me)who went to or are currently in private schools from pre-school,on,definitely Preparatory High Schools, definitely going to good universities afterwards.Noted for conservative dressing, nothing too vulgar or flashy, this group was immortalized in "The Official Preppy Handbook" by Lisa Birnbach.Typical casual clothing is a navy blue blazer, down vests, riding apparel,Lily Pulitzer, tennis apparel, khakis, good jewelry(gold, pearls, diamond studs)...clothes that you see in J.Crew,Eddie Bauer,Jos.A.Bank,LL Bean,Orvis...Preppies like good clothing, all natural fabrics that are not vulgar or show too much skin or are too tight.Everything does fit nicely, though because some items are tailored.Saggy clothing is not "preppy".Too-trendy clothing isn't "preppy." Classic clothing is "preppy."

I think that if you dress like a mall rat, youre a preppie.
Preppie used to mean "yuppie", when I was in school. So, someone who just is too wrapped up in self image.
This makes sense to me, since youre asking this question.
Try going and volunteering somewhere, where you will feel like you are making a difference.
Soon you will realise that its not all about what people think of you, but what you think of yourself. You might also be a compulsive shopper, which is a mental condition, which you need to address by building up your self image.
