The chance of it actually screwing anything up is like 1 in a 1000. Just use common sense. if you're going to be knocking it around while moving it, then turn it off. If you're going to be nice and careful with it and not drop it, then you should be fine.

It would be wise to turn it off and then move it, then there is no need to worry. However, you can move it as it is if you REALLY want to . . . but unless your hard drive has some kind of shock guard protection, just expect your system to hang within a few seconds of a sharp bump or drop to your system. You'll then have to reboot your system anyway. The risk is up to you, my friend. *smiles*

Essentially, if you are careful, you'll be fine, but it's smarter to turn it off, unhook everything (or leave it, if you are certain you won't pull anything), and then set it all back up in the new location. Unless your computer takes forever to boot or something, it shouldn't be a big deal to be safe and just shut 'er down first. Hope everything works out, either way!

Yes. But, most drives can tolerate one jolt while turned off, better than the vibration of a car, or truck, or aircraft, or boat pounding, or engine throbbing... But drives park the heads when turned off...

You really should turn it off, the heads are in motion, and the disc is spinning, so, any damage from the heads jarring against the spindle, will scratch the entire spindle, ruining the drive! When drives are off, they park the heads, away from sensitive areas!

One jolt, while turned on, could ruin all your data!

Any harsh movement could damage the harddrive or the data on the surface. As lond as you are careful, it should be okay.

Any sharp jolts could damage your hard drive(s). Other than that, just make sure you don't yank any cable or cords.
