Febreeze can work miracles.

Initially, you may need to put it out in the garage or covered area just to air it out. Then, run the sweeper over it to aeriate the material.
If the smell is still strong, you may have no choice but to call a professional cleaner to remove it, but at least you can see by airing it out first.
If the smell is less intense, try odor removing products from pet stores or woolite dry furniture cleaner.
Febreeze will help for minimal odor control. You may even want to sprinkle some baking soda on the sofa and let it sit before you vaccuum the surface.

I myself cannot highly recommend febreeze--I just bought a house that was smoked in and in my opinion, febreeze only works temporarily--you may try it anyway, it couldn't hurt!

One product I've had some luck with is OdoBan, I bought it at Sams. It's concentrated so it'll last you a long time and you can use it for more than just this problem... you may try to put this into a carpet shampooer if you have one and use a hand attachment... The OdoBan bottle may actually have specific instructions for upholstery. I just can highly relate to your problem witht the smoke smell! Good Luck!

I had the same problem. Rent a shampoo machine with an upholstery attachment. Take your time and shampoo it at least 4 times. Look for a shampoo that is for pet and odors.

You have to take your time to make sure the foam in the cushions gets wet and sucked in order to get the smell out.

You won't believe the nasty yellow color of the dirty water... just keep shampooing until the dirty water becomes clean. Don't be too aggressive with the rubbing when sucking though - you can tear the fibres of the fabric.

Rent a rug doctor and the furniture cleaning attachments, clean well, set in sun to dry and air out, spray with a product called OUT, which is in the pet section at Walmart....it works with an enzyme to eliminate the odors and it works really well....I use it rather that Fabreeze because it does eliminate the odor.

Use Febreze or OdoBan. Also putting dryer sheets like bounce under the cushions will help some with the smell. Putting it outside in the sun may help some also.
