Let me give you an example:
Do you know Ziggy? I'm going to tell you a story about him.
He was staying home alone as usual, sitting at the dinner table, when suddenly he sneezes. He then says "God Bless You!". Then he says "Thank You".
Finally he says "You're Welcome". Then he puts his head in his hands and cries. Fuzz (his dog) thinks "The wear and tear from living alone is finally getting to him".
What do you think of that? Does it answer your question?

Saying 'excuse me' when you burp is for the benefit of those around you who heard that atrocious sound you just made. If no one heard the burp (and you're sure of that) then no one would hear your excusing yourself either. Unless it's just an unthinking habit, why bother saying something no one will hear?

Two very different things. One, you're crazy if you say excuse me and you're all by yourself. Two, um...what in God's name would make you think a tree wouldn't make a sound if it fell in the forest when no one is around. That's like saying we don't exist because no one will remember us decades later.

Yes, you should always say 'excuse me'. You can't assume someone did hear you.
When the tree falls in a forest and no one's around, it still makes a sound..

If you burp and nobody hears you it is not necessary to say excuse me. Unless you think you are in a bugged room or something in which case it is necessary to excuse yourself.

I guess not, unless they can visibly tell you burped by the way you move your mouth or something.
