A fantastic and difficult question. Jordan, Wilt, Jerry West, Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, Kareem. I think Michael Jordan was the best basketball player I have ever seen.

According to Yahoo Answers...Michael Jordan

According to people who actually know SOMETHING about the NBA, its either:

Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
Wilt Chamberlain
Bill Russell
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Oscar Robertson

My vote goes for Larry Bird, the greatest all around player in history. Magic and Wilt are close behind.

I say that anyone who picked jordan is just a tool. you all have bowed down to the advertisments. if you see his face everywhere you think to yourself; wow he has to be the greatest of all time look hes on television selling me hot dogs. fools. kobe is just as good if not better. so is king james & t-mac. all of them are just as good if not better. what makes jordan special? what teams did he beat to win championships? all the good teams were dismantaled when he started winning. celtics were done so were the lakers & the pistons.
the best player ever has to be shaq. I never seen any other player ever double & triple teamed every single time he touches the ball. hes a little old now & still draws the double teams but back in his hay day he would dunk on two or even three guys at the same time. I used to love to watch him dunk on david robinson & tim duncan at the same time. Two great defenders helpless against the greatest player ever in the nba.
jordan had certain rules set up to improve one on one scoring. there was the no hand checking & illegal defence. now the league can play a zone. the zone is designed to slow scoring thats why it was illegal for many years. jordan is a joke. he had some skill yes, but so does every shooting guard in the league now.

u cant call one player the best bc there are too many factors. yeah mj was amazing, and he may have been (one of, if not) the best, but u should at least break it down by position, or year in the league, or something like that. my personal opinion-
best point guard- i didnt like him bc he played the role of a big man too often, but ill say magic johnson simply because of who he was. but, i only saying this to appease those of who'll argue ur asses of with me. who i really think- oscar robertson. he did it all before anybody else did. look him up if u dont know.

best shooting guard- ud want me to say jordan bc he could do amazing things with the ball, and he always found a way to do what he wanted. but, kobe does that now, against younger, more versatile, quicker guys. also, what jordan did really isnt the role of a shooting guard. though listed as one in the record books, and pippen was the small forward, jordan did what the small forward does- slashing to the basket, taking a good midrange now and then, but his dominance was used at attacking the rim. the prototypical shooting guard, i would say may be reggie miller. he was THE 2 guard. he moved off screens perfectly, and had a beautiful quick release from anywhere, especially the outside. thats what a shooting guard is supposed to do. dont get me wrong tho, i still consider jordan to be one of the top 3 or 4 ball players of all time, but thats all around. u want a near perfect shooting guard? look at reggie.

best small forward- the best and my favorite really differ. being a boston native, im always partial to the celts, so larry is clearly my favorite (im considering the team that had mchale at the power forward and bird at the small), and def one of the top (small) forwards in the game with that incredible jumper, so ill give him my "all time" vote. but today, the small forward is a hard position to fill, cuz u have to be all around. ur not a center, nor a guard, so u have to have a little bit of everything. you want my honest opinion? andre kirelinko is my absolute favorite small forward of all time bc he puts up number in every category. i guarentee he'll be the first player to record a quintuple double in the pros. may not be the best of all time, but a hell of a guy to play the 3 spot.

best power forward- tim duncan, maybe. he plays like more of a center tho, so its kind of unfair to other pf's. dennis rodman was a straight ANIMAL with the bulls, and im about to get the black jersey of his. karl malone put up the most buckets per game, and is known as (arguably) the most offensivly (its a word) productive power forward of all time. charles barkley was like a bulldog, but he was just too small to me the best.

best center- heres where my celtic pride'll shine through. i say bill russell, and i know im right. how many fingers do you have? ten. how many rings did russell have? eleven. he had more championship rings than he could wear. i know some of you are saying "wahh wahh, wins dont mean hes the best. waaahhhh." shut up. youre right wins dont mean youre the best. consistency does. he was consistently the most dominant man in the league, and he proved it by dominating (thus WINNING), over.. and over.. and over.. and over again, eleven times. this man accounts for over two thirds of the team with the most champ banners (celtics-16). wilt was amazing. blll was better. kareem had the sky hook. bill was the only man to ever block kareems hook. shaq.. well, shaq is shaq, so ill say shaq is top 3 centers. the guy pulled the f'in backboard down to the floor when he was in orlando, and on mtv cribs, he blocked the crap out of his own daughter, so i obviously love the man.

and that is my list for the best of all time.
peace- sam

Even though I like MJ, I would have to say Wilt is the best ever because of his stats and the way he changed the game.

well greatest in my perspective is dominance. and frankly, when someone scores 100 points in a game. that is pretty damn dominant. so my answer is mr wilt chamberlin.

michael jordan and magic johnson are both contenders in this category. its not because of their incredible statistics, but just their ability to make their teammates better. you dont see that in lebron james, allen iverson, and kobe bryant. their teams arent contenders for the championship. but mj and magic really brought out the best in their teams.

THEY JERKS THAT SAID WILT--
HE PLAYED WHEN EVERYONE WAS UNDER 6 FT 2 INCHES TALL. HE MADE ALL HIS FREE THROWS BECAUSE HE RAN AND DUNKED THEM. THERE WAS NO RULE ABOUT NO CROSSING THE FREE THROW LINE. WILT HAD NO BIG GUY TO PLAY AGAINST.

I flip-flop, so this time I give it to The Big Dipper himself, Wilt Chamberlain, as he really altered the game with his style of play
