I don't know WHO you really are; apparently any more than you do. I do know; that I not only accept people who aren't afraid of themselves, but I am drawn to them. If you can be comfortable with the fact that we are all always, learning and growing, this should help you to embrace yourself as an ever-changing being. Think about the funniest person, that you personally know. Everyone likes 'em - but that person says and does stuff that nobody else you know says and does. I don't know I hate to see fear in people - you have got to get over it - don't be so proud - what do have to lose - take some chances and make some mistakes - that way you'll have your own stories to tell and they'll all be true! You came in, you'll move around, breathe, love, relate, and hate then you'll go out, with a piece of mind- all by your big bad self! Do it while you can!

I know. That used to drive me crazy too. How can you be yourself, when every time you try, you get things like, You laugh too loudly, or you try to tell a joke and they say that's not funny, or why do you always laugh at your own jokes?
When you're serious, that's so boring, is what they say. You just get the point, and quickly, that people aren't comfortable around the real you, and when you realize this, and just want to stay to yourself, why are you so antisocial?
I've learned that you can't please everyone , so you've just got to please yourself. It had gotten so bad, with me trying to be everyone to everybody, I didn't even know who the real me was! Today, I'm a person of few words, and I still like spending time alone, just to remember who I am. My friends used to tell me be yourself, and when I told them I was, they're saying, Yeah, sure. Life is weird like that sometimes, but never lose sight of who you are, and if it's not good enough for them, get yourself some new friends that won't try to tear you down.

Yea, I agree with you somewhat. What it really means is your good part of you. But not totally hide all the bad part of you. That's how you be yourself. You're right there are good and bad part of you. If you go totally out with the real you, you'll soon find out know onw likes you.

the truth may be that no one really truly knows who they really are at all, even when we are alone with our own thoughts most of us ask the question "who are you (your name) deep inside?" its hard to be yourself when being yourself can be a constant discovery process, we can only hope to be the best that we can be in any given situation and always strive to be good, kind and loving to yourself and all those around you...

It is only a problem if you require acceptance. Those that won't accept you for who you are really aren't your friends are they? They are friends with who they THINK you are (don't tell anybody; but, they are fake too).

Ummmmm.... who else would you be?
If being pretentious is you then, you are being yourself.

But really, alls they are saying is, "relax, don't be so self conscious."

It's better to be who you are and find friends that have similar qualities than to be a poser. You will be happier for it.

I think it stems from our aversion to phonies. We tell people to be themselves when what really mean is for them to act normally and not be phony.
