(This one is mainly about being an Eagle Scout). Just because we have to wear those lame uniforms, lol Doesn't mean that we have to be made fun of. Being an Eagle Scout can have its rewards such as Scholarship opportunities, ROTC opportunities, among others opportunities. Being a Boy scout was fun to me because there was something out there that everyone could do. My troop and I are friends and true brothers of scouting. I guess people just look at you from a different perspective when you reach these heights or if you were to achieve any peak of greatness. I can't say much more about it, now I just want your imput on what you think about it.

They are hiding an inner fear that they have never accomplished anything worthwhile. At my school being a boy scout (especially an out of the closet one) was about the most uncool thing you could be. So I said screw it. If you're proud there is no insult that people can say that will change you. I wore my uni to school several times my senior year. And not just the plain old thing, I went pimped out: Class A with neckerchief, Eagle medal, two religious medals, OA beads, OA sash, MB sash, green shorts, boy scout socks and my hiking boots.

I did get a few comments from some degenerates who are probably old milwaukee wife beaters by now but many people were curious and asked about hiking, camping, outdoor survival, eagle scout and other things from my uni.

There are huge opportunities for boy scouts and especially Eagle Scouts. Eagles go into the military E2 out of boot, Eagles have a better shot at getting military academy spots, some colleges give credit or wave intro classes for Eagles.

Just remember that anything you do is as cool as you make it, be proud and wear your uni.

Part of this is because they have no clue what is going on in Scouting. It always kind of bugs me to hear others say this- but they don't invite these guys in or brag up what they do.

Part of this is that Scouting HAS gotten kind of lame since its heyday in the 60s. Dumb uniforms the committees won't give up because THEY think they are cool for some reason, programs that feel like the same thing over and over- while they complain that too many units do the same thins over and over...

Part of the problem is a society that somehow considers goodness, competence, morality, etc. to be negatives. Take 'nerd' for example- this is a term used derogatorily for a good person with good tech skills, but may be a bit shy.

I think it's one of those "goody-goody" type things. I personally grew up in a family of Scouters- Grandpa just got his Silver Beaver 2 or 3 years ago, my dad and 3 of his 4 brothers are Eagles, my 4 brothers are also Eagles... (I'm a girl- sorry).

I agree with you, though- Scouting is an excellent program/resource when raising a boy. It gives him something to do, things to learn, places to go. It teaches him leadership skills, and even if he never goes camping again, there are merit badges that can teach him things that he WILL use in his life.

I heard about a man who was very involved in Scouting, but he didn't have any sons- just daughters. Someone asked him why he was in Scouting. His reply- "My daughters are going to start dating one day---"

Another thougth as to why some may make fun of Scouts- they're jealous of all the fun you have- Sumer Camp, overnighters, etc-- I know I was jealous! (No, I wasn't in Girl Scouts- poor me!!)

I guess it doesn't mean as much to belong any longer. At one time everyone thought it was cool to be a Boy Scout. We live in a lazy society now. No one makes an effort to belong to anything. If you enjoy the Boy Scouts, then ignore everyone and continue in your troop.

first of all, no one can hurt you without your consent, all right? don't get those people to start hurting you men! they're just these people who think that, just because you're doing something that they're not involved in, you're way out of line or so like living in the planet pluto because they don't know what you're doing..they don't really have an inkling of what being a scout truly is...

don't mind them, ok? never mind them...for all you know, one of those people who are talking trash about you and your being a scout has something to hide under his superficial layer of just being this "normal guy who makes fun of scouts and stuff like that kinda thing"...

just like in the movie high school musical.people hated change. they didn't want to accept that other people in the school "hierarchy" were good at other things other than what they're supposed to be only good at....eventually, things started to change...it only depends on you and your thinking....nver mind those people you talked about....:0

just getcha head in the game...:)

I think boys scout is for boys, there comes a time when you want to stop hanging with other boys in the woods and making pine derby and exploring new pleasures your girlfriend in the woods, CATCH ME DRIFT

I believe that others make fun of scouts because they might be jealous that their families can't afford to allow them to join (uniforms aren't exactly cheap).

You know what's right -- stick with it. People make fun of people they are afraid others might start looking up to. You da man!
