I believe it was a few things.
-One this already happened in 1995 in the Pihlippines.
-Two there were a lot of people colaborating in this plot.
-Three, I don't think the discovery of this plot was very recent. These bad guys have probably been under surveilance for quite soem time. By stopping them at the last minute it makes them (bad guys) question there own security and safety.

I don't believe it was a fatal flaw. It was the techniques that our law enforcement were allowed to use to track them. It was a joint US and British effort as far as intelligence. Tell this to the people who say our civil liberties are being taken away, waaa waaaah waaaah, this is much better than having another terrorist attack.

The first answer by Fred Flinstone pretty much got it right. It's just fear-mongering by the government. They slap down that label "terrorist" and scream "red alert" just to get everyone all worked up and distracted from what's really going on: A quagmire of a war based on lies, government corruption, corporate greed, the upcoming election, etc.
