Do you mean in San Francisco? If so, then I'd advise strolling down Mission or Valencia streets. There are lots of used bookstores & thrift shops in that district.

I like the small bookstores. They can help out a lot better than Barnes & Noble or Borders. A few of them are Black Oak Books (which is not really that small), City Lights Books, and Stacey's Bookstore.

Try Green Tomato they have locations in the inner Sunset about 9th and Irving I think, and one on Clement Street in the avenues (I think it's at sixth and Clement). New and used books, good store.

I have had good results finding what I need and with all the booksellers I've contacted.
