Are you referring to the name they use on-line in a forum like this or a real world nickname?
I think in a forum like this the point of a nickname is transience. People want to flit in and out of sites with no consequences. They can be deliverately provacative and if people get offended or hostile just leave the site or log in with a different name. It's the allure of anonymity. I think also that the internet is one more influence in our lives encouraging a short attention span, so people adopt a nickname reflecting their interests of the moment and then move on to something else before too long.
As for real world nicknames, I think that the way many people acquire them is through insults, characterizations that may not be flattering or reflect a characteristic of themselves they don't like or have outgrown.

I guess some just like a change now and again. I'm sure others have had to for various reasons. I just stick to the one though. It's enough.lol.
