You put a cupful in a quart jar with a cup of water. Shake shake shake shake your bottle...
Let it settle out. Gravel will settle out first, then sand, then clay, then organic matter.
Or you can just grab a handful when it's wet and squeeze it into a lump. If it stays in a lump, it's got clay in it.

If I'm not mistaken Aj, get a jar place about a half cup of soil in it; shake it and let it settle. The clay will go to the bottom and the lighter soil will settle on top of it you should be able to see how much of it is clay.

It's called tilthe.
Grab a handful of soil. If it holds together in a sticky ball, you've got a lot of clay. If you can't even grab a handful, boy, you've really got clay.

Good soil should loosely clump together in your hand, but break apart easily. You should be able to see the individual particles and it should drain well.
