There seems to be a consensus that it is ok to kill civilians in order to get to the bad guy.

Do we assume the bad guy means to put a lot of bullets through YOU in the next half second or so? Then you better have your mind made up in advance. Those who say this is a terrible question and should never have been asked would be dead. Sure, you try not to hit the child, so long as you can still take out the bad guy with instantly mortal hits. I don't mean to sound ghoulish, but we all have to KNOW how to respond to an emergency and be WILLING to take action, no matter how tough.

It's a tough call to make when the bad guy behind the child is also shooting rpg's and missiles at populated areas of innocent people. You target the bad guy, try not to hit the child, but if the child gets hit, what other options are there? Let the bad guy keep killing hundreds of innocents?

Define "bad guy" and the situation first. You make it sound like you must kill the child to kill the bad guy? Only a coward hides behind a child! And no you don't kill the child . All "bad guys" have there day of justice believe me!

Are you saying because the Hezbollah hide behind children that we need to not kill the child to kill the terrorist . I say kill the child and the terrorist an blame Hezbollah they caused it.

If not, then nobody ever gets the bad guy. And that would be the bad guys fault not the person shooting.

ummm, I'm sure I could get a clear shot if the bad guy is just 'behind a child' if not, try and make a hostage exchange. if that doesn't work, take him out Solid Snake style, or something.
