Ahhhh .... Johnathon Dancy's Brain in the VAT, the basis for the Matrix. I prefer Dewey's pragmatism. Perhaps it is all a dream but I would like to manipulate it so that it can be as pleasant as possible.

"I think therefore I am"
assumes the outcome in the statement
and is false as a result.
not that I dont like Descartes; He Rocks
I don't have an answer to your question
but after a lot of thought and time spent
The question is a waste of effort
If you are there, Act!

Yes.
Cogito ergo sum... latin for "I think, therefore I am".
Descartes pondered this problem and that was the solution. He couldn't prove he existed by his senses because he could be dreaming, his sense could be lying to him.
However, by simply having the thought in the firstplace then he must exist and that's when he came up with, "I think therefore I am." Cogito ergo sum.

Being afraid of absolute certainty is not a good thing. You are distracted from the here and now for no good reason. This could only contribute to failure. This "I" is not a rock, it is sensitive to pain and pleasure. I endure pain to get the pleasure. To perfect judgement in all its dimensions is the graduation for human intellect, efficiency and humanity, accomodating love as the skin and the person within. Idea is the idea for freedom, freedom from and freedom to. As we develop the Idea, we develop this "I" as social consciousness and beauty as we accept what we can not change, and learn what we can.

well i have a crazy cracked up idea that none of us really exist and that we are all just figments of each others imagination in order to prevent us from getting bored. But then again to get bored we would have to exist - gah its confusing

Hinduism's got it wrapped up, I think. We're all part of a God's dream, or something... Don't worry, they last for billions of years, he/she's not gonna wake up for a while.
