Don't get me wrong...I think people should make their love final, but just like Christmas, weddings have turned into cheesy events in which brides often turn into monsters and are ungrateful..Is anyone else with me on this? Weddings have become their own monsters.
I want to elope and not pawn free gifts and money from people. I am probably one of the only women who never dreamed of a fairy tale wedding..it just doesn't appeal to me.
This is my opinion and you are entitled to yours , just as I am to mine. Play nice.

You're not the only one. I'm with you on that. The standard extravagant wedding seemed like a lot of misery and waste to me.

When I got married, we had a small civil ceremony in a public park. Friends wore jeans and shorts. I wore a regular skirt, a top , and sandals. My husband wore a white button-up shirt and slacks. We had a picnic afterwards; like, we bought stuff from the grocery store the previous evening, and just set it up on a park picnic table. Was very fun, low key, inexpensive, and relatively relaxing.

If my parents hadn't been OK with the type of wedding I wanted, I would have eloped sooner than have had the major event wedding. Some people like that sort of major event thing, and I guess that's cool for them (and it keeps caterers and dress designers in business), but to me it looks like misery.

Gifts were, an aunt paid for the picnic, and my dad took us all out to dinner that night, and gave me money to get a set of pots and pans (which I actually needed).

What else. I know two women my age who eloped with their now-husbands. Like me, first and only wedding for them both. They're fine, happily married, no regrets about eloping and missing out on the big party. You are not alone.

I found your question really interesting!

34 years ago I married first time round - white wedding, not the most decadent because it was the poor '70s but still pretty standard rigmarole, all the families etc. And secretly, I just did not like it at all! It all seemed so pretend and daft!

13 years ago second time around, 3 weeks to organise, down at the Register Office, new outfit and a pair of shoes, everyone across the pub for their own pub lunch afterward. It was a fantastic day! Cost probably less than £100 all round (incl licence).
Still married!

C'mon, wedding is not a dream nor a fairy tale, at least for me. you dont wed just for the heck of it, or because you were carried away by the emotions, or you pawn free gifts and money for people. it is a sacred union, and being that, you need all the kinds of preparation for it - mental, emotional, spiritual, name it - because it deserves so. Eloping is somewhat childish; it implies you lack the commitment and maturity to face the challenges of a marriage life, you just like to play around and live up to the moment.

I agree 100%! Way too much money gets wasted on all the silly stuff, and usually the marriage doesn't last. I can't believe that people are spending upwards of $20,000 on a silly wedding!
We went before a judge, and the whole cost was the price of the license. We're still married 26 years later!

You're not alone. I'm in love with my boyfriend and we would like to get married one day but a huge wedding extravaganza is not in our future. We're just not in to that kind of thing. We rather just elope. Besides, we both agree that our families are insane. LOL
