They are fighting fish, they have been like that forever. More than likely a beta will always attack another.

The males are extremely territorial. In the wild, two males would fight, but the loser would be able to retreat before being killed. In a captive environment, there is no escape, so the stronger male will continue attacking until his competitor is killed.

Most likely they will attack if they are jealous or if they are threatened by each other. Even if one beta eats the others food they will get mad.

Betta's are very territorial. Two males (long flowing fins) will attack each other to protect and also that is their instinct. If youre case is a male and a female, I suggest you wait and see if the male is making a bubble nest.(it bubbles it blows from its mouth with water and mucus). That will hint to you that it is very happy and may want a girlfriend(lol). hope i helped

2 Male bettas contained in a similar tank will combat and kill one yet another. 2 lady bettas would be positive mutually. in case you opt to place a male and a woman betta contained in a similar tank mutually you will decide on a million Male betta to 7-8 lady Bettas. yet another decision is getting a 2.5 gallon tank that features a divider and divide the tank in 0.5 and you will positioned 2 male bettas in it. solid success!

please dont buy betta fish they are confined to dirty bowls and vases. These tiny glass enclosures are hardly acceptable homes for bettas, who, in nature, swim in large ponds and streams. Sadly, many people buy betta fish because they think that they can “save them.” What they don’t realize is that this just creates a demand for them, so stores will just keep buying more and more fish, condemning them to miserable lives as a trinket or accessory in someone’s home. heres a site about them
