Color code the keys. The top of the key that gets hook to a key chain can be painted or put marker in them. You can also buy colored rings that go over the top of the keys.

Why is it hard to read engraving??? Maybe the hardware store has some of those punches with numbers on them or maybe you can even ask your friendly dentist to cut some numbers into your keys. I'm a dentist and that's what I do. Sorry everyone can't have dental drills, but for those of us who do, they come in darn handy for things besides teeth. Maybe someone has a Dremel tool which would cut deeper than that buzzing "engraving" tool.

Dip the key in paint to color code it. don't paint the part of the key that goes into the lock, just paint the handle part. Use a paint or dye that will not rub/wear off.
