One of my very favorite books in the world - A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle. I love all of her books.
Other great books:
Matilda, and The BFG, and The Witches; by Roald Dahl
The View From Saturday, and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
Baby Island, and Caddie Woodlawn; by Carol Ryrie Brink
The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, and Mandy; by Julie Edwards
Into the Dream, by William Sleator
Dear Mr. Henshaw, by Beverly Cleary
The Hero and the Crown, and The Blue Sword; by Robin McKinley (well, maybe when you're 13)
Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery
The Egypt Game, by Zilpha Keatley Snyder

The Watsons Go to Birmingham is an awesome book to introduce during black history month. The Table Where Rich People Sit is another great book to teach children about the most important things in life. And because I love native american history, The Birchbark House. Hope this helps a little! Books are life!

Well I recommend Hatchet (and its sequels; I read that in 6th grade), The Princess Diaries series, To Kill A Mockingbird (a very classic and probably the most challenging), Holes, Eragon, Artemis Fowl series, Cirque Du Freak series, The Supernatural, and Number the Stars. There are more books but I don't remember them all...

I loved this book and it is a great read..can't wait to buy the next in the series! As far as being more challenging than HP...I don't know -I havn't read them yet. there is a scene described in the book that made me horrified, but i was also told that HP was a littlr on the dark side as well.Ok the name of the book is "ERAGON" and is written by Christopher Paolini and the second book in the series is "ELDEST"

-The Naked Mole Rat Letters (forget who the author is)
-The Cat Ate My Gymsuit by Paula Danziger
-The Same Stuff as Stars, The Great Gilly Hopkins, and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
-The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
-Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
They're not all that challenging, but they're all really good.

Have you read the Lord of the Rings trilogy? When I was in 6th grade, my favorite books were about people with handicaps, blind, deaf, etc. I also like reading about young people with challenges such as anorexia, leukemia, etc. Real life stories are full of lessons. Check with a librarian for books that will help you with what you want. You may want to venture into adult mystery, such as Agatha Christie.
