That would be unethical. By reading the book, you got your money's worth. If you can't afford to buy (and keep books), then you need to start getting them from the public library.
A library card is free. You can even donate books to them that you no longer want. That helps them stretch their limited budget. You can ask for a donation receipt to deduct it on your taxes.

Not only is it not ethical, but it would be stealing. Authors make very little on each book that is bought. You read it, so you don't have the right to return it.

It would not be honest of you to do that no matter if you got away with it or not. A better solution is to sell it on Amazon. They make it so simple that it is a no-brainer. Go to Amazon and click "sell my stuff" Type in your ISDN number and put down your price. That is all there is to it. You can get most of your money back and when you get grandkids, you can look them in the eye and talk to them about character.

Barnes and Nobles is a store, not a library. Go to the library, which is not as cool with no cappuccino bar, but it is free.

They can tell by the spine, if somehow you read the entire book and didn't make any mark in the spine, then I guess, but it's pretty crummy.

It's not the point whether they will know or not. You'll know and it is cheating. Wrong is wrong, have some integrity. Sell it on Ebay, or Abe's or Amazon
