Why do you assume everyone discriminates?
Because it's true.
We all discriminate.
It's human nature.
And all assumptions are based on truth.

Chinese are smart? That's a new one.
Anyways it is easier to stereotype and discriminate than it is to just treat everybody equally. If you tried to treat everyone equally you would be constantly getting surprised all the time that they were different from somebody else.
The stereotype of black people being rude, ignorant and ghetto comes from real world experiances that most people have had with them. Not all blacks are bad, just a great deal seem to be a type of person I would not want to know.
The stereotype about whites..lol there are too many to list here but it all boils down to people believing that they are treated better than everybody else. What do you expect from the majority group though?
Muslims..do I really need to explain why people live in fear about them? You really can't tell the difference between an islamic terrorist and a normal muslim because they look the same. This is a group of people that actively hates america and all we stand for, and is actively pursuing ways to attack us. I'm not saying all muslims are bad. I've been to saudi arabia and met some very excellent people there. But the schools in that country teach hatred of western "imperialism" in their textbooks. This means that arabic children are being raised to hate us which is partially why things are going so bad anymore with muslims.
Mexicans..well darling people think they are poor since they seem to want to cross the border in droves in search of work.
Discrimination has been around since man learned to walk. That is why there were different "tribes" of humans in ancient times, to seperate each other from other tribes. But anyways, I hope this helps. It would be nice if people were more tolerant, but as always it is going to be easier to hate than to love, or at least tolerate.

when people don't have a lot of experience with the world, they are scared by it and need to make assumptions, put everyone in little categories.
watch some episodes of the first season of the awesome TV show - All in The Family - you will be amazed at how brave America was back then, really facing things, and you will see the bigot, Archie Bunker, portrayed so humanly that you come to pity these folks before you hate them.
To the gent who thinks all assumptions are based on truth - perhaps you mean all stereotypes have a kernel of truth. Assumptions are often wildly wrong. That's why, as a police dispatcher, I was trained to never assume: "To assume is to make an *** out of (yo)u and me !" was the memory devise.

People asumme black people are rude and ghetto because that what you see in TV. Most black rappers dress like thugs and talk about how cool being a thug is. Young black people embrases the thug mentality. People see that and they assume it.
White people can dance, but they assume that because they seen other white people that cant dance. They assume all white people cant dance. The same situation with muslim, mexican, and chinese.
People assume that

It's a choice for many. It's also because it is a way for the simple mind to organize people and to try to make sense of the world around them. I do not condone it, and I try very hard not to stereotype or discriminate. People just can't see past the wall, and realize we're all the same...

so they don't have to think, or get to know someone from another country or culture that they might not be familiar with. and if I may get biological...(and i don't agree with any form of stereotyping) a fear of people who look different from you may have been necessary for survival at one time.
for example, clans that only had very small physical differences would have to be able to identify each other in order to defend their territory from other groups. and, obviously...this isn't needed anymore, but some people are still threatened.

In order for the powers that be to maintain control over their populations, they must make the people believe that they are different from each other, so that they cannot truly Unite. Age, Race, Sex etc... Then they can pit them all against each other, and maintain control without the people Uniting, and rising up to fight against them.
