How young? anything that increases dexterity such as play dough and building blocks for young toddlers is important to develop hand eye coordination. Games that help with mental development such as card games that match up pairs etc. Toy keyboards for a bit of music and anything that gets them using their imaginations ;)

I like Discovery Toys... they are designed specifically for educational purposes and can be lots of fun. You'll have to check their website to see where you can look at their products near your area... I've seen these toys at home parties and at county fairs.

Anything that's too big to choke on. My little girl likes pretend dishes and kitchen stuff, crayons, the sit n' spin, books, blocks, trucks, etc.
