First off, you have to dilligently sit down with the guitar everyday. Check some free and good resources such as cyberfret.com which will start you off with basics and then teach you some pretty intermediate to advance techniques. Cyberfret.com also provides videos in cause tabulature isn't enough. I'm a visual person so that was great for me. Also make sure to learn scales especially pentatonic in order to start mastering soloing. Happy playing!

i love rock music too, but i cant play my strat guitar right yet, so yeah. ive been playing since september, and im 13. i mostly play my acustic guitars. im still trying to figure out new ways to get better too, so if u fins anything, let me know. but ill give u some of my tips. i look through chord books and try to learn a chord that looks difficult, yet easy at the same time. then i will fool around with it a lil until i come up with a good beat and kinda form it into my own song. it is real fun, u should try some time, but like i said, let me know if u come up with anyhting

My husband started out playing around and even though, he didn't go into it professionally, he just picked it up and learned to do simple cords, the adding the fingering to it. If you are in high school, see if they offer guitar in the electives. A lot of high schools do offer it and if they don't look up the parks and rec. department or local YMCA has classes. Other than that, just go to a music store and look for the books of music that you enjoy. It is easier to play something that you are familiar with and know if it sounds good or not.

if you love rock, then you must be the type who wants to learn how to play fast and go off on long solos. What you need to do is learn a couple of scales- maybe blues scales and learn them until you can play them up and down the fretts at a fast pace. That should exercise your fingers enough to learn other things

PLay the music you like to hear, it makes practice less of a bore. Try to learn to play more complicated songs. Branch out from playing songs you know, to piece you make up yourself. Its all about practice, and not getting bored with practicing. If you want specific techniques, scales, etc, get some professional lessons, but I never did that, just play what I like to hear.
