I live in Ct, and we have a law saying that you can't talk on your cell phone while your driving and if you get caught you will get a 100.00 ticket. This law is such a joke. I see so many people talking on the cell phone while driving. My question is, what is your opion about driving and talking on the phone. Do you think it's a safe thing to do, talk and drive at the same time.

There are studies that show that driving while distracted is the cause of accidents in more than 75% of non-alcohol related accidents. Talking on a cell phone is a major distraction. It isn't only the holding of the phone either. If you are talking on the phone, it is different from talking to someone in the car with you. Usually people won't ask questions of a driver when they know they are performing a difficult task - like say turning left across 4 lanes of traffic. Or if they do, they don't expect a response immediately.

A phone conversation has different ettiquette. The person on the other side has no knowledge of the situations, and as such expects complete attention and prompt answers.

Cell phones can be very dangerous that way. Even with hands-free devices.

Yeah its safe as long as you don't drive like my mom. Her phone rings, she jerks the wheel to reach over and grab the phone, then tries to steer the car with her elbows and flip open the phone, has to take her middle finger and pause her CD player because she swears she can't hear the call and yells so loudly into the phone for no reason to talk. I stopped riding places with her, I have a car, sometimes I just would catch a free ride somewhere but after I saw that I could be killed with her, I just stopped riding. If someone's chasing you, you're advised to call 911 so what if you're on your cell with a 911 operator and a cop stops you, would you still get a ticket or would he actually listen to the call to believe you?

It's not safe because most people can't multi task. Here in NC they're trying to pass a law that teens under 18 can't drive while talking on the phone, the phone can't even be on or else you get a fine of 250 bucks and your permit extended 6 months. I guess they passed it cuz NC has the highest rate of accidents that are teen-related.

Having seen many near misses involving people who talk on cell phones, I think its great to fine you if you're doing it.
People don't pay enough attention in the car as it is, let alone throw a cell phone in the mix.
I also think you should be fined for taking care of personal hygiene in the car, i.e. shaving, putting on make up etc...

I think it is a good law. When talking on the cell phone, you don't have 100% attention to the driving which can cause wrecks!!

Sure it is.

Look around. If it were dangerous, there'd be people crashing all over the place.
