I have a tattoo on the top of my leg, on the side, below my hip bone. It hurt b/c there isn't any fat there - just bone. Plus I have a lot of outline...the tattoo is rather large. I was shocked when it was done to tell you the truth. I'd give it a 6.5: it was a very odd sensation but I got used to it. As long as you're not a complete wimp (and hey, there's no shame in that, we cannot control our pain thresholds!) you can certainly deal with it.

I had a girl-friend come along and we talked w/ the tattoo guy, there was also a good Sox game on the t.v which distracted me. Overall, I have to say that, knowing the level of pain it caused, it was well worth it and I would do it again.

I also had my nose pierced and I accidentally knocked it out one day after having it for only one week. I've wanted to get it again ever since but am too chicken b/c I thought the pain was worse than the tattoo - it just didn't last as long as getting tattooed but wow, let's just say I shouted a four-letter word at my friend who said it wouldn't hurt! Liar!

Not on base of spine. It would be better on the side, or lower buttock.
I have a daughter who looks like a Christmas tree so I should know.
Never have a ring anywhere near the eyebrow - this area has
indirect connection to brain. When she appeared with it, I told her
and it was not taken out! Four months latter she had a serious
infection so I ordered it be taken off. Fortunately the infection did
not reach the brain. Now, please go to a competent tattoo salon.
All instruments must be carefully sterilised and the tattooer should
wear gloves. Do not go to the cheapest, get it done by the best that
you can afford. And remember that fair skin is the best. She tells
me that it does not hurt but I believe it depends where on your
body it is applied. Good luck.

I have a tattoo on the side of my lower back that gets close to the spine on the middle. Getting it hurt A LOT. The outlining felt like a knife cutting my skin and the shading felt like a red hot poker being rubbed into the skin. And yes, it hurts more the closer to the spine you get.

You should consider someplace other than right on your spine. Everyone has one there -- they call them "tramp stamps". Be original, and also pick a place that has some "padding" underneath to help with the pain.

Getting a tatoo isn't about the pain. If that is all you are concerned about you might not want to get one right now. Getting a tatoo is a lifetime commitment. So, whatever you get wherever you get it placed will be there forever (or until you get it removed which is expensive and way more painful than getting one).

That being said, I've gotten 5 tatoo's and I would have to say that they didn't hurt that bad. The closer to bone and nerve centers obviously the more pain there will be. But, if you really want a tatoo the question of pain will not be an issue.

I would spend more time considering what I would want on my body permanently and less time on the temporary pain it would cause.

i ve just paid a grand for a tattoo, i now have 5, anyone who says it dont hurt is lying, but its a pain you can stand, avoid the neck it pretty sore there, base of spine is fine to start with for a girl, but my advise to you would be dont have a small one, if you can afford a bigger one have it done in sessions. good luck hope you get one soon, pain scale 7

I got mine on the hip bone and everyone told me it would hurt there cuz it juts against the bone, but it didnt hurt one bit, i was completely fine, it just felt like something scratching ur skin, just take care of it after u get it done if u end up going through with it since the healing process really determines how good the tattoo will look and how intense the colour will be.

Funny...just had my back done (across the shoulders and all the way down the spine)...it's just uncomfortable not painfull, but then I suppose it depends on how high your pain threshhold is!!

I was told to have a good breakfast first because it helps your sugar level cope with the stress.

I was fine...what did hurt was WAXING MY BACK...You women are sadistic!!!!
