A good example is like when you go to a concert and they play the song and then after the song is pretty much over, like there's no more singing, the band will keep playing the music, just there will be no singing. i've seen it a lot at like, pop concerts where the singers change clothes or something like that, while they're backstage the band is playing still.

it's mainly used in jazz. It's the accompanyment that the lead player uses to improv from. Basically just a simple repeating riff that's got a nice feel to it.
