The dealer wants $200 to get him a key. He removed the tripletree & took it along with proof of ownership to a locksmith, they had it for 2 days & told him they could not make a key for it.

AJ White is right. You can purchase the whole ignition assembly, including the key, gas tank lock, and helmet lock for less than $100.

Unfortunately the VIN isn't' enough. I've worked at a dealership and the only way you can get a key is either

1. you have the key tag that should come with the bike that more than likely he doesn't have especially if he bought the bike used.

2. You have to take the ignition off to get the key code off bottom.
Course, I only speak for Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, & Kawasaki. I don't know about other manufacturers. It maght be a little difficult but try taking off the ignition yourself to save money, and to see the code better rub baby powder over the code.

It's because of the Key that is cost so much, I've had better luck with looking on eBay for the complete ignition w/key for less. But at the same time the cost from the dealer is about right, I've heard of much more being charge for a key. Hope this helps.

Yes they are ripping him off because he should be able to give the VIN number to the dealership and they should then be able to get him a key from that. I did it with my truck when I lost a key. I gave them the VIN number and they put it in the computer and Woallah a key was made. Yamaha wants some extra cash it sounds.

If he kept a record of his key # and has the title to the bike he should be able to get a key. If the dealer you are working with is uncooperative try another. At worst it may establish if yamaha's policy is the same as your dealers

YES..... Someone has a copier key. And if they don't want to give it to you you can always call a keymaster to make you a new one. They'll maybe charge at the most and extreme 50.00
