no you need to have a special laser in your dvd player to burn things

Yeah you can download the program, but you still won't be able to burn the files onto a dvd without the dvd burner.

There are some programs that claim to allow you to burn movie files to a blank cd disc with a cd burner, but I don't know about free. You can get a new dvd -cd combo burner for around $40.00 at newegg.

the software will do you no good if you dont have the burner itself

No. Software will rarely help you do something for which you do not have the hardware.
