Chronicles of riddick stands on its own very nicely

There are a few scenes that have reference to Pitch Black, but its only character history, not plot

No, there's really no need to see Pitch Black before the Chronicles of Riddick. Even though Pitch Black does explain who a couple of the characters are in Chronicles you can still figure things out on your own and it won't interfer with enjoying the movie. You can always watch Pitch Black at a later date, if you feel the urge.

Not really, both movies are good independent of one another. It does help to see Pitch Black first which sets up Riddick as an escaped convict trying to survive while coming to terms with depending on other for help or monster food as the case may be. I suggest watching Dark Fury by Peter Chung a animated short film that connects the two movies almost seamlessly. Even if you don't like anime it's worth watching and its only 30 minutes long.

No, Riddick is quite easy to understand, you don't need to see pitch black first!

I saw Pitch Black when it first came out and somehow missed that it was connected to CoR when that one came out. So I watched PB again and thought, Ohhh...so that's where she came from. And Ohhh...so that's why he was attached to the Muslim man. PB and Riddick go nicely together. We have them both now and watch them in weekend SciFi marathons at our house. You can see each independently, but if you dig the movies, PB gives you important background for CoR.

I didnt watch pitch black either, but I didnt find CoR all that hard to understand. I still liked it; stood well enough on it's own.

Here's a spoiler page for Pitch Black; you can catch up.
