Generally, FOX incompetence. It was a relativly expensive show, aired on Friday nights, was preempted 3 times (twice in a row the second two times,) and aired heavily out of order, a liability even though the series was not overwhelmingly arc-based. Even though it was able to attract modest numbers and had decent audience reaction, considering it's airday, Fox felt it was then too expensive to continue with.
Apparantly, the executives that initally green-lit Firefly had been replaced before it went to air, and there is some speculation that the replacements, in order to make their predecessors look bad (and therefore, validate their replacement) sabotaged Firefly as much as they could, so that it would fail.

Because Fox bosses are stupid. Firefly was cancelled because it didn't get the ratings Fox wanted for a Joss Whedon programme so they axed it after only 14 episodes (Only half of season 1). It was an insult, that was a really great show, I loved it.
Do you know what the big annoyance of it is, if it hadn't been cancelled they wouldn't have made a film and killed off shephard Book. I really wanted to know about his past. Oh well, film was great, bring on Serenity 2! (Yes, I am a browncoat, and proud of it).

Honestly. Stupidity is the reason. The first episode of Family Guy after it was renewed kind of says it all.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter Griffin: [after "Family Guy" returns to Fox with new episodes, after a few years off the air] Everybody, I got bad news. We've been canceled.
Lois Griffin: Oh, no! Peter, how could they do that?
Peter Griffin: Well, unfortunately, Lois, there's just no more room on the schedule. We've just got to accept the fact that Fox has to make room for terrific shows, like "Dark Angel", "Titus", "Undeclared", "Action", "That '80s Show", "Wonder Falls", "Fastlane", "Andy Richter Controls the Universe", "Skin", "Girls Club", "Cracking Up", "The Pitts", "Firefly", "Get Real", "Freaky Links", "Wanda at Large", "Costello", "The Lone Gunmen", "A Minute with Stan Hooper", "Normal, Ohio", "Pasadena", "Harsh Realm", "Keen Eddie", "The Street", "American Embassy", "Cedric the Entertainer", "The Tick", "Louie", and "Greg the Bunny".
Lois Griffin: Is there no hope?
Peter Griffin: Well, I suppose if all those shows go down the tubes, we might have a shot.

Firefly, of course, didn't even last a full season.
The ratings were terrible, even by Fox Network standards.
The first show got ratings of 4.0, and the ratings then went down each week and ended up in the mid-2's. Shows that pull those type of ratings don't make it on a premium network, as Fox is/was striving to become. They may not have been good enough for even a secondary network like UPN or WB which, of course, aired Whedon's other two series.
In fact, the show was Fox's lowest or second-lowest rated show every week that it aired - including its premiere episode - except for the last episode aired (the original two-hour pilot, and that was the third lowest rated of the week for Fox).

BTW, it was one of my favorite shows.

The ratings weren't good. Not enough people were watching the show. It's a damn shame because the show was, and is, great. Atleast FOX weren't complete a holes and put the series out on DVD so I can enjoy Firefly anytime I want now.

Ratings were not good.....of course, they were able to establish the cult following, but it wasn't good enough for the network to renew. I think this is one of the biggest bummers in tv. I LOVED that show! I think a lot of people started to watch it when it came out on DVD and were very upset to find out that it had been cancelled. I miss that show a lot. Smart and funny.

It was a cult series. A lot of people liked it, but not enough people watched it to bring in money. It was an expensive series to make.
