Always remember- use the least amount af absorbancy possible, and change at least every 5-6 hours. Do not use tampons the last day or 2 of your period as they may dry up the vaginal mucosa too much and cause small tears.

There is no specific brand, we each like our own personal choice. Start with the slims, or teens first, and go up if they aren't enough.

Stay away from Tampax Pearls, however... studies have shown that they have microfibers in them that can cause small cuts in your vagina when removing them. These small cuts can increase your chance for Toxic Shock Syndrome.

TSS can be prevented by use of regular changing and the least absorbancy needed.

I would reccomend using a Jr. or slim tampon first. Everyone has their own brand that they like, that shouldn't impact what kind you want to get. I used pads when I was a teenager (HATED THEM) so I was so glad to use tampons. So much cleaner, but anyways, I started out with Tampax Regular. I'm not a virgin and I still find the Super absorbancy tampons a lil too much for me. The regular is a good deal. There are boxes that have varriations in it. Like a multi-pack, so when you start off light, then go to heavy, or what not, you can choose in the box from the different absorbancies.

Oh! and also also, the ones with a plastic applicator were not a friend of mine! The tip of the plastic where you inserted it in had 4 little triangle cuts (hope that makes sense) anyways, I pinched myself and it hurt! So that was the end of that.
Anyways, good luck! :)

I used pads as a teenager, but I hated feeling. I tried Tampax with cardboard at first but that didn't work to well. They hurt when put in wrong.I couldn't get a good grip on the applicator. I now use Platex or Tampax Pearl. Don't get storebrand! They suck, and are always cardboard! If you feel comfortable enough to talk to your mom, see what she says. Make sure you get the right kind (regular, super, etc.), you don't want any accidents. When my period is on the heavier days I use supers and need to change about every hour to two hours. You'll learn what works for you over time. Good luck!

Pearl tampons, with a plastic applicator. I dont like using cardboard applicators ( well many women dont) because it hurts when you insert it. If you buy tampons with plastic applicators, its alot easier to slide in and out. Pearl is just great, it has a scent to it where it doesnt make u smell like period all day long! They smell fresh and clean. Dont use offbrand tampons though, they always have cardboard applicators and dont have any scent to them! it will say on the outside of the box whether they have plastic applicators or cardboard, so you dont have to guess which box has which. It will also say on the back of the box whether the tampons are light, moderate, or heavy, just get the box according to your flow that period. Good luck!

kotex security regulars. if youre a virgin my advice would be to not do it. i tried pre y'know, and wasnt successful, and it was messy and painful. but ifyouve got to, my advice is to stay away from OB- ohmygawd theyre like some trture device dreamt up by the hussein brothers or sumthin.
a few things to understand about your garden variety tampons- tampax, playtes, etc, open like a funnel- picture an inverted triangle-ouch! right? right
so, moving right along, the reason i say kotex security is this: they open cylindrically- in a uniform size, thus less leaks, lesspain, less problem
also, dont look at that damn pamphlet they insert there in the package. itll scare the bejeezus outta you. just have your big sister or your mom or a friend whos already using them help you.
still use a pad or at least a panty liner for back up- leaks happen even to the best of usand its always beter to be safe than sorry.
and alst but not least, change them frequently. never leave one in for more than a couple of hours.

hope this helps

When I first started using tampons I went with the Lite or Junior absorbancy. They are thinner and smaller, and for me, caused less discomfort initially. Then i moved up to regualr and then super, once i found out what my flow was like...Brands, after much trial and error, i like Tampax Pearl.

None, commercial tampons are the most harmful menstrual option available out of over twenty different options, you are far better off choosing a healthy option such as menstrual cups - they are also greener, cheaper and more convenient than tampons.

If you do choose to use tampons go for organic tampons such as Natracare, sponge tampons such as Jade & Pearl or homemade tampons as although these still pose a risk to vaginal health they are far safer than commercial tampons such as Tampax.

No woman who is educated about her body and tampons use tampons, seriously, I would strongly suggest you do some research on this yourself and consider safer menstrual options.

If it's your first time to use tampons, maybe you should try using the junior tampons. The only way to really figure it out is to try one until you find the right one.

Playtex, gentle glide. You can try slim fits, but if you have to change them often I would use regular absorbency. Also make sure you insert them far enough or they can be very uncomfortable. They are rather nice after you get used to them, much more comfortable than sitting on a pad all day.
