I think the best thank you gift is a simple note explaining what you are thanking the person for. I think gift baskets are appropriate for business and sales. These baskets and gift cards are so impersonal.

Gift certificate - they are so much fun to get and cheap to mail. Female: Victoria's Secret, Linen and Things or Amazon

its to broad of a question as is it for a special occassion, friendship, etc. gift cards have been very popular as it gives the person the ability to get what they want. this last x-mas, 30 percent of retail ales for the market was gift cards.

for a girl: call a floral shop in their area and have them deliver a small arangment or a wrapped rose with a thank you mylar balloon.
for a guy: a gift card of their favorite store with a thank you card!
