Your question is not too specific so I'm going to answer it this way to cover all bases.

When you are at the movies and the movie is ending , if you are a photographer or someone who is interested in theatre, acting or film production, the proper time to "go" is after the last credits have been posted and the theatre goes black and the last stragglers are just leaving the aisles.

If you have young children with you then the time to "go' would be at first as soon as you realize the movie is ending, you can get to the restroom before the rest of the crowd gets there.

For the NYC Marathon : When is it time to go to your starting point which is at the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, in the fort area --the proper time would be up to four hours before starting time of the Marathon because the place will be packed and if you go any later than that you won't be able to get over the bridge because they close the bridge hours before the Marathon begins. (One foreignor was supposed to be in the Marathon one year, had come all the way overseas and was stopped at the bridge because he just got there too late. So the time to go to the Marathon is very very very early!!!!
