mexico. they have some great young players coming in (giovanni dos santos and carlos vela) who already train with european superpowers barcelona and arsenal respectively and since the world cup about 6 or more players from mexico have moved to play in europe. both mexico and the US are good and getting better, but mexico still has a slight edge. don't trust fifa's crappy ranking system. nigeria has moved to the top 20 above mexico and they didn't even play in the world cup.

Almost all of these answers just presumed that because soccer isnt huge here in the states that mexicans must play better, however that is not at all the case. USA is ranked 16th in the world by fifa while Mexico is ranked 18th. USA!!! Check the link, it'll back it up

I think USA have done better in tournaments (Japan/Korea 2002). They're about the same level.
USA have the better goalkeeper/s in Keller, Friedel, Howard. They either have or still do play for a English premier team. I have no idea who the Mexican no. 1 is, so I'm presuming he's not that good.
Mexico's top defender plays for Barcelona - the top European team of last season. He either starts or is a sub meaning he is top class. There are a few USA defenders who play for average English premier teams - can't compare with Barcelona though.
I don't many Mexican midfielders I have to admit, but Landon Donovan looks like a good player. Can't really comment.
Jared Borghetti and Brian McBride are on a similar level of ability.
I think the Americans have more household names, maybe its because a lot of them play in England.
American soccer is on the up, Freddy Adu is looking like a good prospect. Mexican soccer I don't know.
Mexicans tend to dive more than the USA team, but USA aren't very good with their tackling - in fact it was really bad against Italy in the World Cup.
Both decent teams though.
EDIT - Mexico are better technically.

Mexico, their soccer is more ghetto (no offense), it's like Brazilian or African soccer, there's more tricks and even if you don't have money and don't have a ball, you'll play in the dirt with a grapefruit and be happy, and I think that's where they get their tecnique from.

mexico is better at playing soccer..but the english have hot soccer players (more hot soccer players than mexico) :)

Without even watching either of the countries play, I would have to say Mexico b/c that's what they grow up playing.
