My truck just started making a noise that sounds like a whole bunch of marbles in a tin can. It isn't over heating, it has oil, I was driving it when the check engine light came on and it immediately stalled. When I try to start it, It sounds like it almost starts but just can't quite turn over. I was told that it is probably my timing chain. Please help because my truck is my baby.

The part is probably about $100 bucks but getting in there to replace it is the most expensive. I'd say $200 to $300.

First find out if you indeed have a timing chain or a timing belt. If you have a timing chain chances are your problem is something else (they're designed to almost outlast the engine). If you have a timing belt and it broke while the engine was running then you may be looking at a whole lot of mess like the replacing the valves and pistons in addition to replacing the belt. Again, if you have a chain look for some other cause. If it has a belt the cost to repair may be more than getting you into another truck.

Before you go to the trouble and expense of the timing chain (probably not the problem) find out why the check engine light came on. This might give you a clue as to what system is affected. This will make it easier to address the correct repair.

well in the event you actually have a timing chain 300 to 500 is right but most likely you have just timing gears and this may be the noise your hearing, but of course you didnt mention a motor size and everyone here is shooting in the dark because of that little mishap
