I'm really glad you had the sense to think that the might be a reason for it! So many people just assume that those things are abuse or blind folds.

That is called a fly mask. It keeps flies and other bugs from bothering horses' eyes in the summer. my horse's eyes get all gooey and gross. If i don't put one on her when flies are bad. Its actually a mesh, like a window screen. If you take one up close you can look through it just fine.

There are all sorts of different fly masks, some cover the ears some don't, some have a flap that covers the nose, some don't. They also make fly boots and sheets that some people use on their horses.

You have not given out much information here, but what you are describing is a fly mask for horses. It is made of a non-metallic type screen mesh. There are models that just cover the eyes and large portion of the face, and they also make masks that incorporate pockets for the ears to fit into. This also keeps insects from gaining access into the ears. The edges usually come with a felt-type cushion material around the edges to keep from rubbing the horse's skin. They can be found at most feed & tack stores and come in a variety of colors.

If you have a horse that does not like insects buzzing around his face, this a must have piece of equipment to have in the barn. Especially if you live in the south.

I get a lot of people coming up to me calling me cruel because I blindfold my horses in the pasture.

It's not a blindfold. It's a fly mask. It protects them from flies, sun, wind, and other eye irritations. It can also protect a horse from sunburn. They make several types of fly masks. The average one just covers the eyes and halfway down the face. Some cover the ears, and some cover the nose in addition to the eyes. It doesn't hinder the horse at all. They're quite useful.

The average fly mask: http://www.jockeysite.com/jphotos/fotos/flymask_lt.jpg

I doubt it's blinders, a horse only wears those while working. Not out in pasture.

It's a fly mask. It's a fine mesh that the horse can see through just fine. It's used to keep the bugs out of his eyes. It looks solid from far away, but, I assure you, it's not. Blindfolding a horse, for almost any reason, is a REALLY bad idea. He's ok - don't worry!

Don't worry about this horse, it's owner has put a fly mask on it, it can see perfectly out of it, but it does stop the flies irritating its eye area. It's so nice that you noticed and asked the question and showing your concern, but the horse will be fine.

its called a fly mask. they help horses keep flys out of there eyes and the infections flys can put there. the horses owners proably care a lot about there horse and thats why they put it on. as for the small pasture horses can be just as happy in small pastures as large ones as long as they have good grass or hay and r not underweight. if the horse looks abused then call the animal shelter but if its doesnt dont worry.

its a fly mask to give the horse some peace... from far away it looks like a solid thing but it has little holes and let the horses see just fine. if it's not dirty then theres no problem, but if its really dirty talk to the owner because i used to know a pony who went blind because of that and an eye infection

it is probably a fly mask to keep the flys, they are also used to keep the horse from leaving the property without a fence. A horse that can't see will not go far.

Not to worry...the horse may have to be behind a barbed wire fence instead of a regular wood fence. Or horse could be a bit wild and try to jump the fence. Cart and buggy horses frequently have blinders that keep them looking straight ahead. That way they are not as easily spooked by passing cars, trucks, fire engines and the like.
