The people that lived here before us banged up the door moldings and painted over them. I would like to make them smooth and I would like to know the best way. They are small and medium size nicks. Can you help?

Fill them with wallboard joint compound and sand smooth. It is very easy and looks like new when painted!

If the digs in the wood are not that severe, you can most likely just sand them down enough to hide them. If they are more dramatic and sanding or a light hand planing will not solve the problem you may need to buy some wood filler. If you're painting, not staining over the wood filler, you should never be able to notice it. Give it plenty of time to dry though because it will shrink up as it dries and you may need to apply more. Good Luck.

strip them of their former paint with a good wood stripper and then fill the nicks and holes with a wood putty, wait til it dries then sand smooth and give it a nice coat of a good latex paint.

wood filler and sand paper.....use an electric sander to save your elbows. Don't forget to wear a mask, unless you like brown boogers for 3 days.
