The QWERTY keyboard was designed so that fast typists wouldn't jam the mechanical keys... they were intentionally placed to limit speed.

It has to do with the days before there were even computers and the use of typewriters. They redesigned typewriters to keep keeps from jamming and arranging the most useful keys in the order seen today. The style stayed the same as the computer came along.

There was a study. But it was done way way back and by today's standards the keyboard would be laid out differently.

originaly they were set alphabetically on typewriters, but typists were too good nd typed too fast and they broke their machines. they then set them randomly to slow them down and eventually that became the standard way even if type writers could handle fast typing.
