If you plan to start one in your home I would say set aside $5000. This is for about 5-7 children. It should cover supplies (which can be purchased at second hand stores, or have you family give you supplies for birthday's or your grandopening), advertising (flyers, newspaper, signs, business cards), food for the first month, and extra money for you to live off of.

I would suggest you spend $2500 for everything (it can be done) and save the other half for yourself. For extra employment hire volunteers that are taking a child development course. Have an intern or extern design your signs and flyers for free and personal referenced. And shop at bulk stores for food and thrift stores for supplies (books, toys, movies). And offer special discounts to your customers. Pay for 4 weeks recieve 1 week free. Refer a friend and if they stay 4 weeks or more then they save 50% on two weeks. And be the best at the best rate.

I wish you all the luck and I hope you succeed. It is possible.

Well, depends on what you want it to be. For example, a daycare in your home would likely cost less than renting a building, although would still probably require some home modifications. Will need equipment for the kids - toys, books, furniture, and depending on their age, cribs etc. Then depends on how many kids you expect to care for - will you need additional staff? What are your state laws governing daycares?
