Why would my boyfriend receive a civil summons from a judicial court?

He has 2 children that live with their mother who obtained custody of them just over a year ago. Up till that point he had had them in his custody for over 6 years and even though court ordered she never paid child support. Could this possibly be why he has received a summons?

It should say on the summons or attached paperwork why he is being summoned. Was there a suit attached?

You do not give enough information to answer this. He could have gotten a summons for anything.
