I recently bought it at a secondhand book store ("The most important work of fiction yet produced by any living writer" for only 60 cents? What a deal!) and I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to start it now. I've heard it's pretty much the most complicated novel ever (I've read very complicated novels before, but most ever? I dunno). But at the same time, I've heard that it's very good. What do you think, read Gravity's Rainbow or one of the various other novels I have on hand. Oh yes, and why?

It doesn't so much tell a story as weave a dense web of characters, ideas, and obsessions. I guess that's the complicated part. I found it to be wildly entertaining the first time through, and even better on re-reading. It's not an easy read, but its manic energy just pulls me through it.

The book is very much in and of its period, so brushing up on WWII history, and watching a few corny war movies from the period may be helpful.

Dive in and try it. It's not to everyone's taste, but uniquely rewarding if you can get into it.

I thought Ulysses was the most complicated novel ever. I liked The Crying of Lot 49. Not a bad read.

It is a wild and exhilarating ride. It takes a bit of concentation, and a bit of general knowledge to understand the allusions, but it is an extraordinary experience.

Dive into Pynchon's ocean.

You won't come out of the water the same.
