Here's an answer I gave to someone else with this same question. I wouldn't be repeating myself except our family's experience makes me feel rather strongly about this series, which doesn't get a lot of attention these days.

----------

The Flambards, by K. M. Peyton. Set in England at the time of World War I, the book actually involves four young people growing up together (more or less), with love realized, then overshadowed by the war. Sad/happy. Ultimately realistic, but satisfying.

This is actually a series of books, and K. M. Peyton is a pseudonym for a husband/wife team of authors, Kathleen and Michael Peyton.

Some years back this was made into a BBC series, sorta like Masterpiece Theater, very popular.

These were my daughters' favorite books, and both of them (now grown and married, one the mother of young girls herself) still speak just as highly of them. The whole family got involved in the BBC series, so much so that we bought the videotapes (not DVDs, unfortunately).

Enjoy!

"Princess Academy" by Shannon Hale is an excellent book, and is not at all trashy. It's set in a kingdom where the royal seers get together before each prince's 16th birthday and prophecy which part of the kingdom his bride will come from - then they set up a "princess academy" to get the eligible girls ready and the prince comes to choose one.

Except in the book, they prophecied a tiny mountain province, where the village is built around mining and the people don't have much to do with the kingdom. So the girls in the story are forced to go to this princess academy, learn about decorum and poise and conversation, and are all both worried and excited about meeting the prince . . .

It's a really great read, and the main character is an excellent "You go girl!" kind of person. I wished it was part of a series so I could read more :-)

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is great. It would be perfect if you're looking for romance but not trash. :) It is one of the best books I've ever read. New Moon, the sequel, is coming out in a few weeks.

Sarah Dessen would be an author I recommend you read. She has written so many great books...her newest one is called Just Listen. My favorite (by the slightest of margins) is The Truth About Forever.

Sonya Sones is also a great writer. She writes verse novels...and her book WHAT MY MOTHER DOESN'T KNOW is so great. I enjoy all her books.

i'm no longer lots of a romance reader, yet whilst i'm contained in the temper for love I consistently discover that many historic fiction novels have countless the main genuine romance thoughts. One suggestion I even have for historic fiction with romance is Little women folk by utilising Louisa would Alcott. This tale is approximately 4 sisters contained in the 1800s and how they advance up and discover romance, etc. that's an quite interesting tale. I additionally savor Anne of eco-friendly Gables by utilising Lucy Maud Bernard Law Montgomery. this would be a team (the 1st e book being Anne of eco-friendly Gables), and that's approximately an orphan lady named Anne. because of the fact the sequence progresses, Anne grows up, famous romance, etc. those are exciting, touching books. additionally, you may no longer circulate incorrect with Jane Austen in case you like romance. satisfaction and Prejudice, experience and Sensibility, Persuasion, etc. are in hassle-free terms some examples. maximum suitable needs!
