My 8 year old just started third grade and we have had a problem with him and homework ever since about 1st grade. He makes really good grades in school, but when it comes to his homework, he doesn't seem to remember anything he learned in school. His class and test scores are always good so we don't understand where the break down is. Also when we try to help him, and make him think, instead of just giving him the answer he gets upset and starts crying and fidgeting. It is very frustrating when we know he can do it, we don't know how to make him see that he can do it.

i have a feeling he just hates homework.. uh oh! he has his whole life to hate homework! lol.. is it possible to leave him alone to do the homework, and wait til he asks for help? and make sure he knows if he finishes it as soon as he can, he gets to watch tv, or invite a friend over.. ? sometimes kids respond to that negative reinforcement....
id also suggest a teacher/parent conference, find out what and how your child acts in class. does he follow along, or ask the teacher for help a lot? perhaps the teacher has some good tips on how to encourage him?

hmmm, perhaps you are keeping too much from him. Remember his tutor will always be keeping him on the right track with tricks and hints they have up their sleeves. I guess you guys need to be not so harsh on yourselves to start! and remember, most of us forget the majority of what we learnt at the end of the day.
Think of your job as being his assistant in getting to the end, NOT his Sergeant Major pushing him all the way.
I think if you spent a day in school you may surprise yourself at how much the teachers and his classmates help each other out.

u need to like yell or get a stronger voice and say to ur kid okay u have to do your homework or u will not be a firefighter or cop ect. u need to be smart and if he says he is, then say in highschool u have to do your homework, it is half of ur grade, so if u get a's on ur test and don't do your homework u will get c's
