omg. thats kind of a big question to ask. well, find some friend who like the same kind of music as you. see who can play what. pretty much everybody wants to be the lead guitarists, but also many people wanna do anything to be in a band. if you don't already play, then learn what you want to play. learn the Bass if you want a good band, ause nobody wants to play it, so if you do it, then theirs no problems. its a pretty cool instrument too. anyway, make sure its people you can practice with alot. me for instance, i go to a boarding school, so i see these guys all the time. we can practice in our free time. i am the vocalist and the guitarist. also, make sure you all like the same kind of music. or are willing to play it. i like hardcore punk. my best friend, the bassist, like pop-punk (kinda wierd for a guy) my other friends, our drummer, likes hip-hop. but were all willing to play punk rock. anyway, find a place and people that will lets you practice with drums. drums are a big instrument. and their loud. they are the only unamplified instrument in a rock band. practice about 6 hours a week, in whatever form you can split that up. work hard. set up gigs. work hard. make a website and a myspace page. myspace has become a neccesety for modern artists. make a very nice myspace, even if you don't have any recoreded music.
have fun.

my current band i got into because i'm really good friends with my guitarists, and i kept on bugging them to write stuff. one of the biggest parts of being in a band is having a songwriter or two. after we wrote some stuff we looked around for a bassist and a vocalist. another important thing is making sure everyone gets along with each other. my last band dissolved over a huge fight. once you have members, start writing a set list that you are comfortable with and start talking to local venues. once you start playing shows and gather a fanbase you will be cemented in place with your fellow members and keep getting bigger.
