First off, it depends on what you are printing and what quality it needs to be printed in.

If you are printing nothing but black and white, a laser printer is still the best way to go, a toner cartridge will last for 2000-5000 pages or more, depending if they make a hi capacity one or not.

The typical Ink jet cartridges are generaly good for 200-300 pages, and then you have to put in a new cartridge.

So by doing some simple math you can then determine whihc one is the most efficient, depending on cost of the cartridge and the total number of pages per cartridge it is possible to print.

There are other factors to consider too, print heads, and other problems that can occur with inkjet printers, as well as smearing of the ink on the paper, depending on paper quality and other factors.

Over all a laser printer is the best choice, when your looking for cost efficient printing. And you will also be swaping out cartridges a lot less than you will with an ink jet.

And there are color laser jet printers available as well, so color is not an ink jet exclusive thing any more either.

For most cost effective cartridges you want to look for ink tank systems (it cartridges without print heads) . This is all epsons, some canon and all brothers. Outside of that you need to decide what you will be using the printer for.

My printer is an Epson, I use a continuous ink supply, the "per cartridge full" of ink works out at £0.40 ($0.76), by using continuous ink supply. The full kit was £45, including 600 ml of ink. This trick can be used with Epson or canon.... try a search for "Continuous Ink System"

the best printer I used is Canon IP1500, the ink is very cheap, around 5$ here, and it can print 300 Pages with each cartridge

It depends on your perspective. (bet you didn't think it would straight forward, huh?)
Canon, Brother- replace only the ink tank but after so many dots you have to replace the printhead.
HP replaces the printhead and tanks each time so the print is always new.
Not sure about Lexmark.
So HP cartridges are more expensive than canons
Note: There is a quality improvement with using the manufactures ink over generics especially with photos.

NOT Xerox. Those stupid ink cartridges cost like 50 bucks apiece (one black, one color.) Too bad I didn't know that before I got one of those all-in-one print station dealios. And nobody does recycled cartridges for Xerox and there aren't any generic ones that fit--they have some kind of weird proprietary feature where the ink comes out someplace different than all the other cartridges out there--it doesn't make them better, but it means you can't substitute a cheaper cartridge. Bad Xerox! BAD!

I wouldn't go for Kodak, the cartridges seem to be gone as soon as I put them in.
