Great question, Heidielizabe !

Everything that can be a stimulus for improve Humanity I approve! And this question is a god stimulus, at east, it did persons here doing a retrospective in their life and remembering that has some work to do yet. A lot of people here brought actions did to “my husband”, “my” boyfriend, my… Your question is about altruism x selfishness, I think. When someone do something to “my” he/her is doing for him/herself, it not altruism, I think. “Someone else” is about someone outside our domain, I think. So, truly altruism is doing some help to who we don’t know. So, my vote as best answer goes to doereen69 .

Humanity needs, at least, two types of help from us;
1)Actions that keep Humanity surviving;
2)Actions that improve the level of existence.

What I did for keeping Humanity surviving? I had worked producing useful objects with my hands – like agriculture, homes construction, etc. – which were enough for what I spent for survival myself and a little bit more for keeping the institutions that Humanity needs for survival, like Red Cross, Salvation Army, Government, hospitals, etc…

What I did that improves the level of existence of my specie? Some of them were:
!) At the Amazon jungle, in a poor community, I built a school with my money and hands at work in construction and kept the school as teacher till the government decided to take the school. Today there are 1.200 children studying there;

3)I did public roads, public hospital, brought electricity to the city, spending all my extra saving money and extra time, but, I got help of a lot of people also, of course. But these things are nothing facing the big job of my life, where I put energy and everything during 25 years: The Matrix’s Theory. These discoveries about Nature will be a powerful force that will improve our knowledge for to fight our enemies that is causing our diseases, will be a strong tool for to improve our technology and Science, and, the most important: is a great message as stimulus for to increase love between us. But, wait,

I am not an altruistic, but a selfish. When I am doing things for the Humanity, I am investing in my profits in the future, because my welfare is totally dependable of the welfare of the human society; the payoff will come or/and for my descendants and for me if I will have life after death. But don’t follow my example; because I am not the owner of the Ultimate True, I don’t know if what I am doing is the right thing to do. If you had choose doing things only for yourself I am not against you, maybe the right thing is no sacrifice our own life, maybe you are right, and I am wrong. Who knows?

I created a Sign Language Club on my lunch hour for interested children in the age group of the girl I was Interpreting for. They learned how to use sign language and we had games ,contests, concerts in sign, raffles, and fund raisers for less fortunate children as these children came from a middle class society. The club and the children was a success because it made the little girl who was deaf not stand out in the crowd. Most children could sign and you couldn't tell who the deaf child was among all the hearing children. It was the best time of my teaching career. She graduated this spring. I haven't see her in years but I will never forget this experience.

ok, my brother in military based in Kansas. Could not come home for Christmas of 2004, before going to Iraq for a year. My husband and I had yard sale and sent money we made to my brother for him to come home on. Did not tell my mom, because that was part of the surprise. She almost had a heart attack when my brother walked through the door. It was a nice surprise but I don't think I will do that again, it was just too hard to keep secret, plus the shock it caused my mom. Would never want to hurt her.

Paid my sister-in-laws past due rent that was almost a year's worth (they live in a rural town, so the land owner had been patient, but about to give her the boot). Then I gave her my car as a gift so her son would get to school every day and gave her a generator.

I had a friend who was going through a rough time financially and I knew she would never come out and ask me for help... and I knew I would never get her to accept money from me. (She's a very proud person.) So I went out and bought her a few bags of simple groceries and left them on her porch with a nice little note. She was thrilled and it really helped her get through the week. And it made me feel good for being able to help her out. In fact, it inspired me to be more generous more often in other parts of my life.

I got my friend's secret crush to surprise her on her sixteenth birthday. She was completely surprised and is still in love with me for doing that nine years later.

When a dear friend was hurting, I stayed with her to talk with her and to listen to her, to comfort her.
