WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Political appointees, CIA officers and former military personnel would not face prosecution for humiliating or degrading wartime prisoners under amendments to a war crimes law drafted by the Bush administration, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

The amendments are part of the administration's three-pronged response to a June 29 Supreme Court ruling that struck down as illegal and a violation of the Geneva Conventions the military tribunal system set up to try Guantanamo prisoners, the Post said.

The court's ruling gave prisoners captured in Afghanistan protections under the Geneva Conventions, which the administration previously maintained did not apply to them.

This is a slippery slope - or does every one think it's a necesity?

You've just made it that much easier for you and yours to be next on the doesn't have rights list. Remember I told you that.

it's clearly an act made by an administration that thought it had a blank check and has since realized that it, too, must play by the rules...

now the question is... is this a legal action and how is this legal?

When planes are flown into a building in Canada (if that exists) then come talk to me. Until then go play hockey or something.

If Gitmo helps keep my country safe, and I think it does, I don't care what happens to them.

Edit
I know it's hard for the left to admit it but there is black and white in this world. It's not all grey. Those people want the west dead and that includes Canada. I'm not trying to blow up buildings so I'm not worried about my rights.

The Geneva Conventions MUST be upheld or the last 65 years of civil military laws all go out the window. NO PRISONER WILL BE ALLOWED ANY SENSE OF RESPECT OR SAFETY, HE WILL BE HELD FOR ANY TIME THAT THE COUNTRY who has him wants to hold him, torture will be allowed and even his family won't have to be notified he is alive (or his government). So, YES, the BUSHITES MUST BE STOPPED ON THIS ONE!

Or NO SOLDIER CAPTURED will be safe, ever again!

The English did it, it's rather underhanded, but I really don't care about the civil rights of my enemy. It'd be a lot easier if a soldier would have just killed them.

This confirms the USA as, to quote one author," the most powerful and vindictive nation on the planet".

It is a disgrace for a once great nation to behave like this.
